What do you think of another CEO, from L&T, asking people to work for 90 hours after Narayan Murthy suggested 70 hours for corporate employees?


What I think is SN Subrahmanyan wanted to convey to Narayan Murthy that “If you are bad, I am your dad.” The best way to be relevant in the market is to make one preposterous claim so that all media houses and corporates talk about you!

The proposal of Narayan Murthy’s 70-hour work week looks like a child now that the CEO of L&T has proposed a 90-hour work week! I am not sure if these CEOs see the workforce as human employees or robots who are paid a salary to extract the maximum work out of them.

I understand their viewpoint but it is unfair to expect that from employees who are paid a fixed salary. If I start my own company, I would probably work for 70–90 hours a work, or maybe more than that but if I hire an employee for 30 thousand rupees a month, can I expect him to devote the same time as much as I do? I don't share my profits with him, I pay him just enough to meet the market standards, and I won't think twice before firing him if my company incurs a loss; so why would that employee sacrifice his personal life to build my dream?

The more the employees work, the more profits will these companies make. Sure, the country will progress economically and these CEOs at the top of the chain will earn in crores. But what happens to those employees who are sacrificing their family, their work-life balance, their health and receiving nothing but peanuts as their salary? What benefit would they get if they worked 90 hours a week, which is 13 hours a day including weekends? Even robots will malfunction if they are overworked; we are still human beings.
