Meet Doraemon.
Doraemon works in a government office. He wakes up daily at 7 AM, gets ready for the office, has his breakfast, and takes public transport to work. He reached there at 9 AM, if he is late, he might get a pay cut. He sits at his desk, works for some time, takes a few breaks in between, chats with his colleagues in the chair, goes on cigarette and tea breaks, disappears for an hour for a lunch break, and watches the wall clock impatiently till 5 PM. He packs up and leaves the office to board an overcrowded bus and he reaches home all sweaty at 6 PM, fully exhausted.
At the end of the month, he gets a decent paycheck and seeing his children and his wife happy, he feels proud. He is disappointed that he cannot provide them with a luxurious life but he is proud that they are doing much better than most others and there is respect among the relatives and neighbours. His children and his wife can proudly speak of his profession and he doesn't have to worry when the next paycheck will come. He goes on a domestic trip during the summer and the winter vacations with family and everybody is happy.
Meet Shinchan.
Shinchan has his own business where he has 5 employees working under him. His shop is very popular in the city and he earns a lot of money from there. His employees reach his shop before he does; he reaches there late at 10 o'clock, instructs them, oversees every operation, checks the account balances and leaves by 4 PM for home. He is earning more money every month than what his friend Doraemon would earn in three months.
However, a competitor has opened their shop just a few blocks next to them and customers are going to that new shop now. His sales have dipped and he is struggling to pay the rent of the shop and the salaries of his employees. He is barely making enough to take any money back home. It's summer vacation at his children's school but he cannot take them because he is busy chalking a plan on how to revive his sales. After a few months, his shop once again started to do well but just as they started to make profits, their supply chain was affected. He now has to search for a new supplier. That took another few months where he barely earned anything and paid the salaries and rent out of his own pocket. Things once again became normal and he started to earn four times what his friend in government service is earning.
If you think Doraemon’s life is better and more stable, you would prefer doing a government job. If Shinchan’s life attracts you more because there's a huge scope of earning a lot of money, doing business would interest you more. My point is that there's no fixed answer on whether a government job or a business is better. It depends on the individual, their risk appetite and their priorities. Ultimately, both come with their own set of pros and cons.
