Announcing the first Quora Knowledge Contest in Data Science


We invite you to grow the world’s knowledge of Data Science by providing thoughtful answers to questions selected by Data Scientist Chris Luhrs. Winners will receive awards from a prize pool of $3750. Submissions accepted through Nov 18 2024.


How to Participate

  1. Select a question: Choose one or more of the following questions
    1. How do you interpret and make decisions on A/B tests with many and conflicting metrics?
    2. What’s an example of a time in your career where the naive data pointed in one direction, but a more nuanced approach showed the opposite?
    3. What’s the best application you’ve seen of LLMs to data analysis?
  2. Write your answer:
    1. In order to submit your answer, you will need to first agree to the terms and conditions.
    2. Your answer on Quora serves as your official entry to the contest.
    3. Answers should be a minimum of 200 words.

Prizes and Recognition

  • For each question:
    • Gold Prize: $1,000
    • Silver Prize: $200
    • Bronze Prize: $50
  • Special recognition: A distinguished award badge will be displayed on winners’ Quora profiles.

  • Provide your full name on your profile
  • Upload a clear profile photo
  • Include an informative credential with your contest answer
  • Write a profile description highlighting your knowledge and expertise — academic, self-taught, or otherwise

Meet the Judge

Your submissions will be evaluated by Data Scientist Chris Luhrs:


Chris Luhrs is a seasoned data scientist and technology leader with sixteen years of industry experience with roles in software engineering and data science. He has used data to drive better decisions for most of that time, starting as a quantitative analyst at a hedge fund then spending time at Facebook and Google. He currently leads the highly sophisticated data science team at Quora, a role he has held for the last five years. He has a PhD in computer science from Stanford and a BS in mathematics from MIT.

Chris’s data science philosophy emphasizes efficiently answering questions that will influence critical decisions and blending product intuition with rigorous statistical process.

Judging: Answers will be judged based on value of the answer to a practicing data scientist, taking into account uniqueness, clarity, and relevance

  • Contest opens: Nov 4, 2024
  • Contest closes: Nov 18, 2024, at 11:59 PM PT
  • Winners announced via email and on Quora by December 2024

  • Eligible countries: Only residents of US, Germany, Japan, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India, Mexico, Portugal, Argentina, Colombia, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Poland, Morocco, Hong Kong, Singapore, Ireland and Switzerland eligible to participate.
  • Other legal requirements: Participants must adhere to all contest rules and regulations.
