Madhabi Puri Buch, born in 1966, is the current chairperson of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and the first woman to hold this role.

Madhabi Puri Buch completed her initial schooling in two cities, Fort Convent School in Mumbai and the Convent of Jesus and Mary in Delhi.

She completed her undergraduate studies at St. Stephen's College, Delhi University, in mathematics. She further went on to complete her MBA degree from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad.

In their latest report, Hindenburg Research claims that after taking charge of SEBI, Madhabi Puri Buch introduced new laws especially to benefit certain companies like Blackstone Group, a company where Dhaval Buch, Madhabi's husband, works as an adviser.

Madhabi Puri Buch: Career

Madhabi Puri Buch began her career with the ICICI Group, where she worked for the duration of 17 years. During this time, she served as an executive director at ICICI Bank for 12 years and was the Managing Director and CEO of ICICI Securities from February 2009 to May 2011. She has also worked with other departments of ICICI like ICICI Web Trade Ltd and ICICI HFC Ltd.

In 2011, she moved to Singapore to head Greater Pacific Capital LLP. She later founded Agora Advisory Pvt Ltd and worked with the New Development Bank in Shanghai for three years.

Additionally, Madhabi held non-executive director positions at several major firms, including Idea Cellular (2011-2017), Max Healthcare, Zensar Technologies, Innoven Capital, and Gabelhorn Investments.

She was appointed as the Chairperson of SEBI on March 1, 2022. Her term was initially set for three years, with the possibility of extending up to five years or until she reaches the age of 65. She was appointed by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, with the Financial Sector Regulatory Appointments Search Committee (FSRASC) overseeing the selection process.
