Clint Eastwood in 1951 was drafted into the Army and posted to Fort Ord, California, where he was a lifeguard and swimming instructor throughout his military service, while returning from a weekend visit to his parents in Seattle, the military plane where it was traveling ran out of fuel and crashed into the sea near Punta Reyes. Eastwood and the pilot escaped from the aircraft as it sank and with the help of a lifeboat made the 2 miles to shore.
This story was on local television and was seen by Chuck Hill, who worked at Universal Studios who was shooting in Fort Ord and was impressed by Eastwood's appearance, and since he had contacts in the film industry, he managed to sneak Eastwood into Universal Studios. in Hollywood to be met by cinematographer Irving Glassberg
This in turn made it easier for him to audition with director Artur Lubin, who, despite being impressed with his appearance, thought he had no acting skills and recommended that he attend acting classes. Lubin got him his first contract in April 1954, for which he would receive $100 a week.
