What are the April Fools’ pranks that went terribly wrong?

In 2001, a DJ in England decided to prank his listeners on April 1 by broadcasting that a ship that looked suspiciously like the Titanic could be seen from the cliffs at Beachy Head in East Sussex.

Listeners believed him and trekked to the cliffs to catch a glimpse. Hordes of people were hanging about, some with binoculars, looking out to sea.

Unfortunately, all the foot traffic caused a large crack in the cliff face. A few days later, it fell into the sea.

Never come across an April Fool joke which affected so many. The people were convinced it was true. And it went terribly wrong in the end.
