Hppy labour day in commemoration of the Haymarket Riot in Chicago (1886) . The day is observed as an occasion to commemorate the contributions of labourers and working class.
The first May Day celebration in India was organised in Madras (now Chennai) by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan on May 1, 1923. This was also the time when the red flag was first used in India. The day is tied to labour movements for communist and socialist political parties.
International Labour Day: History
The first May Day celebrations focused on workers took place on May 1st, 1890 after its proclamation by the first international congress of socialist parties in Europe on July 14th, 1889 in Paris, France, to dedicate May 1 every year as the "Workers Day of International Unity and Solidarity."
The date was chosen due to events on the other side of the Atlantic. In 1884, the American Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions demanded an eight-hour workday, to come into effect as of May 1st, 1886. This resulted in the general strike and the Haymarket (in Chicago) Riot of 1886, but eventually also in the official sanction of the eight-hour workday. Three years later, a French socialist party created an international day to honour the labour movement and marked May 1 in commemoration of the Haymarket Massacre.
Labour Day or International Workers' Day is observed each year on May 1 to celebrate the achievements of the working class. The day, also called May Day, is also observed as a public holiday in many countries. It came into prominence in India in 1923.
The day that is devoted entirely to the labour class. It is celebrated on different days in many countries. But, most countries, observed it on May 1st.
The labor holiday in the USA — Labor Day (note spelling) — isn’t related in any way to electoral politics. You have to understand the internal politics of the labor movement of the late 1800s.
In the 1870s and 1880s the largest union organization in the USA was the Knights of Labor. This organization pushed the idea of a “cooperative commonwealth” — basically a kind of socialist economy made up of cooperatives. The union had been influenced by the radical abolitionist ideas of the civil war and reconstruction era, and was open to all workers — blacks and whites, women and men. Its slogan was “An Injury to One is an Injury to All.”
This union surfed the growing movement for the eight hour day to push the big national general strike for the 8 hour day on May 1, 1886. More than 300,000 workers in the USA took part. In Chicago the leaders of the Knights of Labor and the local labor movement were radicals of the International Working People’s Association, such as Lucy and Albert Parsons, and others. During the strike police attacked and murdered strikers at the world’s largest factory, a farm equipment plant. At a protest meeting the next night the police attacked the peaceful meeting with guns blazing. Someone threw a bomb at police.
The authorities used this is as a pretext to round up the leaders of the Chicago movement, subject them to a kangaroo court trial for murder — no evidence was presented of them having anything to do with the bomb. They were tried on the basis of their socialist ideas — IWPA was a libertarian socialist organization. Four men were hanged. These men are known world-wide as the Haymarket Martyrs. In the 1890s the world socialist movement adopted May 1 as International Worker Day as a holiday to commemorate the Haymarket Martyrs.
Here in the USA the conservative leaders of the American Federation of Labor — a group of craft unions that were often racist and at odds with the inclusive unionism of the Knights of Labor — bitterly opposed celebrating May 1 as a worker holiday. So they backed a proposal of a conservative politician to make Labor Day in early September. That is the origin of Labor Day holiday in the USA. It was due to an attempt of the conservatives in the US labor movement to avoid any support for the more radical tendency, represented by the legacy of the IWPA and the general strike of May 1, 1886.
In US, a union of workers had announced a general strike in 1886 for an 8-hour workday instead of a 16-hour workday. To control the crowd, the policemen started shelling and many workers were killed and a few were injured.
An overseas movement started after this incident and it wasn't until 1916 that the United States began to recognise eight-hour workdays.

Labor unions themselves celebrated the first labor days in the United States, although there's some speculation as to exactly who came up with the idea. Most historians credit Peter McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, with the original idea of a day for workers to show their solidarity. Others credit Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J.
The first Labor Day parade occurred Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City. The workers' unions chose the first Monday in September because it was halfway between Independence Day and Thanksgiving. The idea spread across the country, and some states designated Labor Day as a holiday before the federal holiday was created.
