How did it become a rule to listen to Shrimad Bhagwat Katha for 7 days, what is the reason?

King Parikshit was the grandson of Arjuna and the son of Abhimanyu. Bhagwat was propagated as the boat that crossed the ocean of the world. Pandavas had coronated him while leaving the world. According to the policy, he followed the subjects like a son.

  • Once King Parikshit went to the forest for hunting. Due to running after the wild animals, he became distraught with thirst and wandering here and there in search of the reservoir, he reached the hermitage of Shamik Rishi.
  • In the hermitage of Rishi Shamik, his son Shringi and other Rishi Kumar used to study together. While all the students had gone to the forest, Shamik Rishi was sitting absorbed in the samadhi in the ashram, at the same time Raja Parikshit, distraught with thirst, reached the ashram. The king searched for a lot of water here and there in the hermitage and Shamik Rishi who was sitting in the tomb went to him and said with great humility that I am thirsty, please give me water.
  • The king repeated his words three to four times continuously but the sage was engrossed in samadhi, so he did not get up. The king felt that the sage was pretending to be engrossed in the samadhi, on this the king got angry and picked up a dead snake lying nearby and put it around the sage's neck.
  • All the Rishi Kumars reached the ashram at the same moment to welcome the king, but when they reached the ashram, the king had left the ashram. Everyone saw a dead snake around the neck of Rishi Shamik, who was engrossed in meditation. Seeing this, his son Shringi got angry and cursed the king with water in his hand and said that the death of King Parikshit, who insulted my father, would be 7 days from today. After a day Nagraj will be bitten by Takshak.
  • In the meantime, other Rishi Kumars pulled out a dead snake from Rishi Shamik's neck, only then Shamik's meditation was broken. When Rishi Shamik asked him everything, he was told everything in detail. After listening to him, Shamik said, "Son, it is not right to curse King Parikshit to die of snakebite for a simple crime." This is very bad, it does not suit us, son, you have not got the knowledge of these things yet, so you go to God and apologize for your crime.
  • King Parikshit also realized his mistake while reaching Raj Bhavan. A disciple of Rishi Shamik went to King Parikshit and said, O king, you were not honored properly by Rishi Shamik, who was absorbed in Brahma Samadhi, for which he is extremely sorry. But the dead snake you had put around his neck, because of which his son cursed you to die after 7 days from today, his curse will not be untrue.
  • Therefore, you are requested to devote your wholehearted devotion to God for these 7 days so that you can find the way to salvation. After listening to the curse, King Parikshit Vyasputra went to Shukdev Muni, where Shukdevji narrated Bhagwat-Katha to King Parikshit continuously for seven days, since then the tradition of holding Punyaprad Shrimad Bhagwat Katha for one week started.
