Lord Ram did not defeat Ravan with the help of Lord Hanuman. Lord Hanuman, Sugriv ( Exiled King of Kishkindha), Vibhishan (brother of Ravan) and others played a very significant part in defeating the army of Ravan.
However, Lord Hanuman played a very important role in Ramayan. Some of his important role is as under:-
1.Messenger of Lord Ram :-When Lord Hanuman made his leap across the sea to the island-kingdom of Lanka in search Maa Sita, who had been abducted by Ravan. He meets Maa Sita and gives her the message of Lord Ram that Lord Ram is coming to rescue Maa Sita.
Lord Hanuman starts destroying the grove, prompting his capture.
Hanuman tells Ravan that Lord Ram is coming to take back Sita. Ravana orders his servants to light Hanuman's tail on fire. Every time they put on an oil-soaked cloth to burn, he grows his tail longer until Ravana has had enough and orders his tail to be lit, he shrinks his tail back and breaks free of his bonds with his superhuman strength. He jumps out a window and jumps from rooftop to rooftop and sets the city ablaze.
2. Lord Hanuman saving Laxman’s life by bringing Sanjeevani
Throughout the long battle, Lord Hanuman played a role as a general in the army. During one intense fight, Lakshman, Lord Ram's brother, was fatally wounded; it was thought that he would die without the aid of an herb (Sanjeevani) from a Himalayan mountain. Hanuman was the only one who could make the journey so quickly, and was thus sent to the mountain.
Upon arriving, he discovered that there were many herbs along the mountainside, and did not want to take the wrong herb back. So instead, he grew to the size of a mountain, ripped the mountain from the Earth, and flew it back to the battle with the Sanjeevani and saved Laxman’s life.
3. The story of Ahiravan Vadh by Lord Hanuman
According to legend, when Indrajeet, the valiant and extremely talented son of Raavan was killed by Lakshman, Raavan wanted a revenge from and therefore summoned his brother from the netherworld, Ahiravan. Ahiravan had initially decided not to be a part of the war against Lord Ram.Ahiravan was a devotee of Goddess Mahamaya. Ravan convinces him to capture Ram and Lakshman and sacrifice them to the goddess.
Ahiravan kidnaps both Lord Ram and Laxman through his maya and takes them to Patal Lok. The Patal Lok was the world of reverse flow. It was a world where all the rules of nature were completely opposite to what we have in our world.
In Patal Lok he meets Chandrasena, who tells him that the only way to kill Ahiravan was to extinguish five lamps facing five different directions at the same time. For doing this, Hanuman assumes the form of Panchmukhi Hanuman.
Lord Hanuman then goes on to kill Ahiravan with one swift blow of his knife. He ultimately manages to kill Ahiravan and rescues Ram and Lakshman.

4. Lord Hanuman killed Nikumbha during Ramayan war
Nikumbha is a demon and is the son of Kumbhakarna. In the battle Lord Hanuman directly attacks Nikumbha, by striking his fist forcibly on Nikumbha’s chest. Unmoved by that blow, Nikumbha lifts Hanuman off the ground. Hanuman in retaliation frees himself and throws down Nikumbha on the ground. Hanuman descends on Nikumbha, pounds his chest with his fist, catches his head and tears it off. Thus, Nikumbha dies at the hands of Lord Hanuman.
