Bullet Train Project: L&T, Afcons Among Four Major Players In Race To Make BKC Station In Mumbai

This will be the only underground station in Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor.

4 major firms / consortia have submitted bids to construct Bandra Kurla Complex Station of the 508.17 km Mumbai – Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR Bullet Train) after National National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd. (NHSRCL) opened technical bids today.

NHSRCL had originally invited tenders for this package in November 2019 and cancelled it in February 2022 due to uncertainty over its construction due to an indifferent state government at the time. Tenders were re-invited in July 2022 with a 1638 day (4.48 year) completion timeframe.

Bidders:-

Afcons Infrastructure Ltd.

J. Kumar Infraprojects Ltd. (JKIL)

Larsen & Toubro (L&T)

MEIL – HCC JV

IFB Number: Package No. MAHSR-C-1

Brief Scope: Design and Const. of Civil and Buildings Works on Design-Build Lump Sum Price basis for Double Line High Speed Railway for Mumbai Underground Station, Cut and Cover Tunnel and Shaft-1 from MAHSR Km. -0.255 to Km. 0.775 at BKC in Maharashtra

This terminus station of 1.03 km long Package C1 will be built using the cut and cover method between chainage -0.255 to 0.775. The 467m long station area within it will have 6 platforms of 425m length to accommodate 16 coach trains.

The station box will consist of 3 levels – service floor, concourse and platform at a depth of 24m below ground level.

Larsen & Toubro and Afcons Infrastructure are among four players who have submitted their technical bids for Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor project involving design and construction of Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) high speed rail (HSR) station in Mumbai.

The station has been planned in a way that ample space is available for passenger movement and amenities at the concourse and platform level. A dedicated skylight provision has been made for natural lighting.

The amenities planned for passengers at stations include - Security, Ticketing, Waiting areas, Business class Lounge, Nursery, Rest rooms, Smoking rooms, Information Kiosks and incidental retail, Public Information and announcement system, CCTV surveillance, etc.

Besides that, the integration with other modes of transportation like Metro, Buses, Autos and Taxis is also planned.

The other two players - J Kumar Infraprojects and MEIL-HCC Joint Venture - are in the race for the construction of the BKC HSR station of the MAHSR corridor.

The bids were opened on 4 November to be followed by the opening of the long awaited financial bids.

According to National High Speed Rail Corporation, financial bids will be opened for technically qualified bidders, once the technical evaluation is completed.

NHSRCL had invited bids in July for the design and construction of BKC high speed rail station in Mumbai. This will be the only underground station in Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor.

In addition to BKC station, the tender also includes cut and cover length of 467m and ventilation shaft of 66m. This shaft will also be used for taking out tunnel boring machines (retrieval shaft).

The assigned contractor for BKC Station will also be required to build a tunnel boring machine (TBM) retrieval shaft on the eastern-end. This is where TBMs used in Package C2 will complete their underground journey.

If things go according to the scheduled timeline, then I see preliminary construction work for this package starting in mid-2023 and actual construction work by 2023-end.
