Stories that make your day but also break your heart where all this is needed for medical care of people who can’t afford it.
We must really admire her courage to take that desicion, as an athlete your trophies are the most precious things that we wish to keep with us all our life. Being able to decide to let go of that trophy is simply bravest thing to do that too for charity. Hats off to th spirit.
She is a special girl. It is a miracle that she even took part in the Tokyo Olympics. After the Rio Olympics, she had serious health problems. First, a shoulder injury, something extremely dangerous for a javelin thrower. Surgery and long rehabilitation excluded Andrejczyk from sport for months. Then it got even worse . Bothersome headaches appeared, and the Diagnosis? : cancer, but fortunately it did not turn out to be malignant
This tells you how far away we are from really from an enlightened, ideal society
This was an easy one for me. Javelin thrower Maria Andrejczyk of Poland. She won the silver but she has a heart of gold.
Upon hearing an 8 months old boy needed a life saving heart surgery in her home country of Poland, Ms Andrejczyk decided to auction off her silver medal to help pay for the cost. The auction raised $125,000 that was needed for the surgery.
The boy had his surgery at Stanford University in the United States. But there’s more. The super market chain Zabka in Poland that won the bidding decided to let Ms Andrejczyk keep her priceless Olympic medal. The company issued this statement: “We were moved by the beautiful and extremely noble gesture of our Olympian. We also decided that the silver medal from Tokyo will remain with Mrs. Maria, who showed how great she is.”
To me it was one of the most inspiring and heartwarming stories in the history of the Olympic Games. And for that I will forever be a big fan of Ms Andrejczyk. Heart operation and any other are free in Poland. Thing with organs is thought, there are less organs than people in need. And it's impossible to somehow make more human hearts (for now), only option is getting them from donors. So there are long wait lists, people are waiting years and sometimes it's just to long to wait. I don't know how this is in US, but probably same as with everything: who gives more money can take even few hearts, even if they're born in paleolithic.
What is really heartbreaking is that billionairs rather use their money for flying into space, which at itself don't contribute to humanity at the moment at all. But noone thinks how to make people actually healthy, to save humans from poverty so they could take care of themselves. Healthy people doesn't need medication or operations, so there would be nothing to earn money on. That's extremely sad.
