What is the main biggest problem of unemployment in India? Is it true that most engineers in India are unemployed?

What is the biggest problem of unemployment in India?

January 8 2022
Our parents always say (padho padho) study, study… be first in academics… that's all. Their narrow mind is the reason why the country has a lack of skills, most of the youth is unemployed. Because apart from studies they don't know other stuff, they don't have any ideas. They have a lack of confidence. That's why many of them are not getting jobs. USA produces around 1 lakh Engineers per year for a $ 16 Trillion Economy.

India produces 15 lakhs Engineers for a $ 2 Trillion Economy.

If there are so many Engineers in india, there must be enough demand to pull them in. But it is not there. The earlier mass recruiting sector was Manufacturing. It used to recruit from the core branches like Civil, Electrical and Mechanical. But, Manufacturing is stagnant at just 17% of the GDP. So the core branch placements have become very difficult.

The new mass recruiter is the IT sector. It grew from scratch to almost 5% of the GDP in 25 yrs. IT Employed millions of engineers.

Now, IT is also coming to saturation. Only good Skilled IT Engineers are in demand.

If you look at the sectoral composition of Indian economy, most of the sector do not need engineers. Tourism is 10% of the GDP, does not require engineers. Financial sector, Trade, Hotels and Restaurants do not require engineers. Requirement in Health, education, Agriculture is almost negligible.

More than 50% of the GDP has no role for Engineers. Still most of us are becoming Engineers. The current situation is not sustainable.

So the demand is less while the supply is high. Over and above this, skill level of an average engineer is poor. I say its non-existent. Leave the top 100–200 colleges. And you will find that a fresh engineer has no idea of what s/he has studied. Ask a fresh mechanical engineer, can s/he design a simple frame?

Today the situation is that most engineers are working in a field that has no connection to what they have studied in the college. This is a waste of resources.

Engineering degree does not come cheap. It costs about 10-15 lakhs. For poor parents, its a huge burden. When their son is not able to secure a job, they are devastated.

For the nation, you can calculate the loss. Leave around 1 lakh engineers that NASSCOM says are employable. The rest 14 lakhs have each wasted 10 lakhs of fees. That totals to around $ 20 Billion. Almost equal to the Government’s spending on healthcare. Over this, there is loss of human capital.

We need to replan the whole engineering education system. Cut down on the number of colleges and improve the quality in the rest.

Also students should explore other career options than everyone becoming Engineers.

So, share this to your relatives/parents/12th pass students and save their lakhs of rupees from being wasted.

The other reasons we lack behind are:

Colleges : Most of the colleges are doing business with engg education with help of politics where earning money became priority than imparting skills.

Syllabus: It concentrates on old and obsolete methods, it requires a huge change.

Teachers: some of teachers don't have practical exposure, often they stick to theory. Most of the teachers are landed directly into teaching after their education with least or no practical knowledge. Most of them teach for getting marks in exams.

Students: Careless attitude,Lack of discipline, taking subjects without passion. Etc.. Seriously. Tell an engineering student that tomorrow's test is cancelled. I will bet s/he will stop studying.

Bcz we are habituated to such system where exams and marks are given priority.

But fortunately, in the last two-three years I have seen many parents, students youths are also taking part and able to see the career in another field is also possible like sports, beauty, photography… and the new revolution in startups business sector.
But yet a long way to go to finish this misunderstanding.

“Give your child freedom to choose what is right for him or not.”

The choice of employment sector is the problem in India. True, and I feel parents need counseling too, because what a child aspires to become is also decided by the environment and culture he is brought up in, if the parents themselves are not exposed to new avenues, a child will eventually start shaping his aspirations based on what people in his surroundings appreciate and not what is required and apt for the child.

Everyone wants to be either an engineer, doctor, or Civil officer. Brilliantly put Eti.

I meet students who want to join coaching for administrative services and most, if not all, join classes because their parents want them to. A friend of my Big Brother's has already started pushing his son (6th std) for pursuing IIT.

Really? and what can we do by becoming a farmer? Does farming assure you at least minimum to support yourself as it wholly depends on nature’s call. How many farmers are well off? And whatever you are saying about 15k, I think its just the starting salary which is assured to increase as one gains experience, can you say the same with farming. On top of that everyone doesnt have 10–12 acres land to farm on and i dont think we cant do all these without securing our future as neeraj chopra was already earning while practicing. How many javelin throwers would reach olymics, how many fashion vistas would go on to become miss world, so I dont think there is anything wrong in taking up engineering or medical if it, at least assures you enough money to fulfill your hunger.

It came as a shock to my uncles and aunts when my IIM passout brother left his MNC job to become a farmer. Mom and dad have always supported us but the “log kya kahenge” did come up from the guests' side.

Most don't have the courage to stand up for their own wishes and our social culture is so hell bent on turning us into copies of each other that only the best of the best do something, rest are left to be called losers…

Indians need career counselling (along with moral science classes, but that's another matter)…

This results in high competition within these fields and only top students get the job.

While others sit with a tag of unemployment.

Even parents want their kids to have a secure life, so they encourage them for these 3 fields only.

Other job fields are for others and we are only for clapping shouting,

INDIA HAS A LOT OF TALENT.

Recently one village lady got Padam shri.

But We don’t want to become a farmer in 21st century that’s humiliatng. I feel overpopulation is the main reason and many indians disagree with it which i do not understand .For example There is 51 fortune 500 companies india for population of 1.1 billion .In other countries USA has 635 companies for population of 330 million,UK has 35 for population of 60 million , Japan has 52 companies for population of 180 million. Also we have less schools, hospitals and universities .

On the other hand we have Neeraj chopra, Harnaaz kaur, Meerabai chanu, Gen. Bipin rawat. etc etc. But here we are, saying this thing, sitting in am AC office getting 15k salary! Making our image in my society of 4 people, and securing our life nicely.

Unemployement is the bigegst problem because we do not develop good social and Happiness skills

Unemployement is the biggest problem because we are spending more time peeping into others’ lives

Unemployement is the biggest problem because we do not pay taxes

Unemployement is the biggest problem becaus we are more into judging others than analysing self

Unemployement is the biggest problem because Education matters!

This is the problem of India,

We want Neeraj Chopra, Harnaaz Kaur, Bipin Rawat for our country but our kid should have a secure life. Import of Technologies and products from China, Japan, Netherlands, France etc. as We do not have any Indegeneous Technologies and products which can ensure Bank loan for big projects like Coke Oven Technologies, Blast furnace, SMS and turbines. This create hindrances to our Employment opportunity. If Import duties are increased and encouragement to Indegeneous products and Technologies are allowed, then Employment Growth are a must in India. Besides, private colleges with inadequate and Rubbish Faculties must be banned to get our youth jobready. GOVT is to reduce retirement age to 55 with pension and subsidized premium for health insurance for seniors which will create one Million job Immediately. There are many reasons, because of them, unemployment rates are higher in India, like

Education quality(one of the most important reasons for me) because our studies are not up to date, we are studying whey older things which nowadays are not important, we are studying that people have studied 10 years ago, even after technological advancement, our education system has just revised a little bit.

2. There are jobs available but people don't have the knowledge because they have just theoretical knowledge, not practical knowledge.

3. Even if you are a fresher working for any firm regardless of your stream, what we expect that they should give us a lesser amount of work but the salary should be higher, which is never going to happen, and that’s why people don’t pick that company.

India is unable to distribute the power equally in all the sectors of job.

People are ready to take stand or speak against the Farm bill but no one wants to become a Farmer.

People are ready to praise Harnaaz for making the name of India bright but no one wants their daughter to step out in such clothes, to show the world the kind of beauty and brains she has.

This is the problem of India. More serious than Unemployment, causing unemployment.
