To many, saying any negative thing about what’s happening in these pictures translates into you not supporting the cause that these people are are taking pride in or protesting for. Perhaps it’s not that we’re against their cause, but just find their methods obnoxious and counter-productive
This is Neeraj Chopra
He is an Olympic Gold Medalist.
He is 23.
Few days back, RJ Malishka, danced for him & asked for a ‘virtual hug/jaddu ki jhappi’ in what was supposed to be an online interview.
He is 23. She is 38.
And, just days later, he is invited as a celebrity guest for a dance show called DancePlus.
Here, Shakti Mohan asks Neeraj Chopra to hold her hand & propose to show ‘how it's done’.
At first, he is shy. Awkward.
“Hold her hand like a Javelin,” someone laughs.
He accommodates the request.
A romantic soundtrack is played in the background as Neeraj propose. He doesn't hold her hand though.
He is 23. She is 35.
While Neeraj is humble & courteous about it, one really wonders, what would have happened if genders were switched?
A beautiful female athlete being asked to propose and hug men 15 years older than her with romantic soundtracks.
With everyone else cheering it.
Sounds Creepy?
To me, it definitely does.
And yet, our society has internalized that a man is always fine with such acts of love. Who knows, maybe he secretly wants it?
There are hundreds of thousands of videos just like this one. Pretty girls dancing on beaches and wearing bikinis. In my opinion, this is completely fine. This isn’t causing harm to anyone and it seems like the girl in this video is just minding her own business. She looks like she’s having fun, which is what TikTok is all about. Having fun.
There are so many beautiful women on social media. Especially now when the beauty standard is so unrealistic and toxic, even after five minutes of scrolling on Instagram, people feel insecure about themselves. The ideal body type is fairly skinny, which can come with many negative consequences to women who feel like they aren’t enough.
And on this TikTok, there were so many back-handed compliments and self-degrading comments that contributed to this unhealthy side of social media. These were just some of them.
The last one made me furious.
I understand that these people might see others and compare themselves to them, but this girl is not reponsible for their insecurities.
And this doesn’t just hurt them. This hurts her too. Imagine her seeing these comments, feeling like she is at the fault of their insecurities? That she made these girls starve and feel horrible about themselves?
She absolutely does not need to put a trigger warning for showing her body. It’s almost asking her to put a trigger warning for practically existing. It’s her body type, which she cannot control. Instead of tearing each other down, we need uplift each other and stop comparing ourselves. It doesn’t help any of us.
We are all beautiful in different ways, and we need to recognize that. No matter what you look like, you are valid and loved. There are so many gorgeous women with different body types and they deserve to be celebrated.
With love,
