Hamid Karzai is in Kabul, and has not fled. He along with his daughters has asked the Taliban to spare his life along with that of his family. During many of his speeches he spoke about reintegrating the Taliban into Afghani Society, he went as far as to call them his “Brothers.” He knew full well that the Taliban also had amongst their ranks those in Afghan society who could never move upwards other than through affiliation with the Taliban. He has led a battle for his nation, which was a hard one, and his exit from politics may not have been good for Afghanistan.

Hamid Karzai has had a long history dealing with the Taliban and in reality it is a struggle which has shaped his life. He had done his graduate work in India, at Himachal State University. After which he would in 1983 try to raise funds to support dissidents against the Soviet Occupation of Afghanistan, this would lead him to take up residence in Pakistan. When the Taliban came to power he would initially accept them as the legitimate government of Afghanistan. He was even offered the post of an Ambassador. But he saw through the Taliban and realized he was just talking to their real master Pakistan’s I.S.I. and he refused the posting.

Karzai then attempted to support the reinstatement of the Zahir Shah, Afghanistan’s former King who lived in exile in Italy. He would visit him several times. Finally, it would be Nobert Hall, who would pay attention to Hamid Karzai. Nobert Holl was the United Nation’s special envoy to Afghanistan in the late 1990s. He would help create a pathway for the advancement of an organized effort to bring to light the view of educated Afghans to perhaps moderate the Taliban. Karzai would use the opportunity to approach the Americans, and he would now try to push Holl out of the way, as he simply was too diplomatic and would not come forward and condemn the Taliban for their actions.

In July 1999, Hamid Karzai’s father, Abdul Karzai, was murdered by the Taliban in Pakistan. The loss would affect Hamid Karzai greatly and he entered into an agreement with Ahmad Shah Masoud. Hamid Karzai had joined forces with the leader of the Northern Alliance. With his involvement he gained access to intelligence and he shared this openly with the U.S. From 1999–2001 he continued to warn the U.S. about the declining state of affairs in Afghanistan, he warned of the dangerous levels of radicalization, but the U.S. did not listen. Finally when the U.S. entered Afghanistan after the 9/11 attacks, Karzai would be instrumental in ending the rule of the Taliban. Ahmad Shah Masoud had been murdered in a cowardly attack largely attributed to Pakistan’s I.S.I. on September 9, 2001. The situation that Karzai now finds himself in truly reprehensible, and only the coming weeks and days will show what his fate truly will be.
