India vs Germany Men's Hockey Live: The Indian men's hockey team has won the bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics.  The Indian team has won a medal in the Olympics after 41 years.  After falling 1-3 in the match against Germany, the Indian team made a strong comeback and won the match 5-4. India sealed a 5-4 win against Germany in their men's hockey bronze medal match at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics on Thursday. Simranjeet Singh scored two goals for India at the Oi Hockey Stadium, along with Hardik Singh, Harmanpreet Singh and Rupinder Pal Singh also adding their names on the scoresheet. The win also helped the Indian men's hockey team end their 41-year medal wait at the Olympics. Wrestler Anshu Malik lost her repechage round 2 at the women's freestyle 57kg category. She lost 1-5 to ROC's Valeria Koblova. Vinesh Phogat fell to a shocking defeat to Vanesa Kaladzinskaya of Belarus at the 53kg freestyle wrestling 1/4 final. The Indian wrestler was pinned down in her bout. Phogat had earlier defeated Sofia Mattsson in the 1/8 finals on Thursday. Meanwhile, Ravi Dahiya and Deepak Punia will also be in action and will put their challenge forward for India. Dahiya will compete in the final of men's freestyle 57kg category while Deepak will compete for the bronze medal in men's freestyle 86kg category. India saw Germany take an early lead with Timur Oruz scoring within two minutes of the match. Germany troubled Indian defense in the first quarter, but could not find a way to extend lead. In the 2nd quarter, India saw Simranjeet Singh scoring from a well-executed tomahawk shot, but defensive errors lead to Germany scoring two more goals within two minutes. Just when it looked India might be in trouble, two penalty corners for India yielded results as Hardik Singh scored on the rebound from the first one, while Harmanpreet Singh scored another with a superb dragflick on to the back of the nets. Rupinder Pal Singh and Simranjeet Singh scored two more goals in third quarter. Lukas Windfeder pulled one back in the final quarter, but it was not enough for Germany to push it to the shootouts.


The Prime Minister of the country, Narendra Modi has congratulated the Indian team's victory as historic.

This is the third bronze medal for the Indian men's hockey team in Olympic history.  Earlier he had won bronze medals in 1968 and 1972.  India has also won eight gold and one silver medal in the past.

Last five minutes and Germany got another penalty corner but Indian goalkeeper Sreejesh made a brilliant defense.  Germany have so far got 10 penalty corners but in that they have been able to score only one goal.


With the start of the fourth quarter, Germany got a penalty corner and in the 48th minute Windfeder converted it into a goal.  However, India is still ahead 5-4.

The fourth quarter or rather the last and crucial 15 minutes of the match has started.  India still lead 5-3 and on the verge of winning the bronze medal.

Before the end of the third quarter, Germany got several penalty corners but India did not allow it to succeed.  India still have a strong 5-3 lead.

India have done well in the last few minutes of play.  This time after the start of the third quarter, Simranjit Singh scored a brilliant goal on Sumit's pass in the 34th minute.  India has now taken a strong 5-3 lead against Germany.

India got off to a great start in the third quarter.  India got a penalty stroke and Rupinder did no wrong.  Rupinder hit the ball straight into the goalpost and gave India a vital and strong lead.  India now lead 4-3.

India have got four penalty corners in the match so far in which they have converted two into goals.  Harmanpreet's goal at the end of the second quarter got India back in the match.

The Indian team made a strong comeback and scored the third goal of the match.  With this both the teams have reached 3-3 draw.  Harmanpreet scored a brilliant goal in the 29th minute before the end of the second quarter.

India got a penalty corner and Hardik Singh converted it into a goal.  In the 27th minute, Simranjit Singh played a shot from a penalty corner which was intercepted by the Germany goalkeeper but the ball reflected back and Hardik sent it to the goal post.

 Germany scored two consecutive goals within a minute.  Furk Benedict scored his third goal in the 25th minute.  Germany lead 3-1.

 For Germany, Niklas Wellen scored his first and second goal for the team in the 24th minute.  Germany lead 2-1.


The Indian team got off to a great start in the second quarter.  The team opened the account in the 17th minute when Simranjit Singh played a vigorous game to overshadow the German goalkeeper and managed to score.  With this goal, both the teams are tied at 1-1.
The first quarter is over and the bosses of Germany maintain a 1-0 lead.  On the other hand, the Indian team is again making the semi-final mistake and giving Germany more chances of penalty corners.  Germany got four penalty corners in the first quarter.  However, the Indian team has been successful in stopping him.

Germany got a penalty corner in the last second of the first half.  He had sought video referral which was successful.  Although he missed the goal, he got two more penalty corners but goalkeeper Sreejesh failed him.

 India got their first penalty corner in the fifth minute but Harmanpreet could not convert it into a goal.  Germany still has a 1-0 lead.


German player Konstantin got the green card in the fourth minute and will now have to sit out for the next two minutes.

Germany have opened their account in the second minute of the match.  Timur Oruz scored the first goal for Germany.  With this Germany took a 1-0 lead.

India's journey so far in the Tokyo Olympics has been great and a stellar performance will be expected from them even today.  11 players of the Indian team have been announced for the bronze medal match against Germany.

Two days back, the Indian men's hockey team was out of the race for the final.  Team India was defeated by world champion Belgium 5-2 in the semi-final match.  Despite the early lead at that time, the Indian team Belgium had to face defeat.  At present, even after this defeat, India's hope of winning the medal remains intact.  Today the match is being played between India and Germany for the bronze medal.  The Indian hockey team has not won a medal in the Olympics since 1980.  If we win today, the drought of 41 years will end.
