Bajrang Punia Profile Tokyo Olympics: Bajrang Punia has given India another bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics. In wrestling, Punia defeated Kazakhstan wrestler Doulet Niyazbekov 8-0. In this way, India has got a total of six medals in the Tokyo Olympics so far. Bajrang Punia was born on 26 February 1994 in Khuddan village of Jhajjar district. Bajrang inherited wrestling because his father had also been a wrestler. Bajrang started wrestling at the age of just seven, in which he got full support of his father. To make Bajrang's dream come true, his father used to go to his work by bicycle after saving the bus fare. In 2015, Bajrang's family shifted to Sonepat so that he could train at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre.
Bajrang Punia's hard work paid off when he won a bronze medal at the 2013 Asian Wrestling Championship in Delhi. After this, Bajrang won the bronze medal in the 60 kg weight category of the World Wrestling Championship held in Budapest. Then Bajrang performed brilliantly and won the silver medal in the 2014 Commonwealth and Asian Games. In the same year, Bajrang also managed to win a silver medal in the Asian Wrestling Championship.
Bajrang got gold in these championships
After this, Bajrang was successful in winning gold medals in Asian Wrestling Championship (2017) and Commonwealth Games (2018). In the Asian Games of 2018, Bajrang made a memorable performance and won the yellow medal in the 65 kg weight category. At that time, Bajrang had dedicated his gold medal to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. With the silver medal in the World Wrestling Championship held in October 2018, he became the world's No. 1 wrestler in the 65 kg weight category.
Eight rounds were taken in marriage
Bajrang Punia tied the knot with Sangeeta Phogat in November last year. Sangeeta Dronacharya is the daughter of awardee Mahavir Phogat. Sangeeta has also tried wrestling tricks like her real sisters Geeta, Babita and Ritu Phogat. The interesting thing was that Bajrang Punia took not seven, but eight rounds with Sangeeta. The eighth round was in the name of 'Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao'.
At the same time, Bajrang Punia qualified for the Olympics for the first time in 2019 by reaching the semi-finals of the World Wrestling Championship held in Nur Sultan, Kazakhstan. Bajrang had defeated Korea's Jong Cholson 8-1 in the quarter-finals. However, in the semi-finals, Bajrang had to face defeat at the hands of Daulat Niyazbekov of Kazakhstan. Later, Bajrang Punia won the bronze medal in the 65 kg weight category by defeating Tulga Ochir of Mongolia 8-7. With this, Bajrang became the first Indian wrestler to win three medals at the World Championship.
