These pics give this question a validity and with the glimpse of what he is capable of in the icc under 19 world cup, shubman gill has given all the right reasons to consider him as a successor to Virat Kohli. Shubman Gill in one of his interview accepted that he tries to emulate the shots Virat Kohli plays on the cricket field. We will have to wait to see if Shubman gill can take Virat Kohli's place but here is my take on this.
Virat Kohli as of now is extremely fit, and by the looks of it, I think he is not going anywhere for another 8 years. The 2027 World Cup is my take where he retires. The chances of this happening increase if India is not able to win in 2019 and 2023. Shubman is 18 now, in 9 years he will be 27, which is a very good age to take up the anchor role in team India.
The question arises is what role shubman gill sews for himself till Virat Kohli retires. So let's look at the Indian team that may play the 2019 world cup. No 4 is up for grabs big time, but Shubman's name is not even up for discussion in the squad which pretty much signals that he is not making his way in the Indian middle order till 2019. Now if someone like Kl Rahul or Shreyas Iyer plays at 4 in 2019 and performs well , number 4 will be booked for some years to come.
The good thing for gill is that there is a vaccum in the Indian team's middle order in the shorter format. Dhoni will retire most probably after 2019 World Cup. Dinesh Karthik, Ambati Rayadu, Suresh Raina etc are aging, which means he can get opportunities in the middle order in time to come. If he makes good use of the opportunities provided, he can become a regular in the Indian team.
There are many difficulties too in his way. Gone are the days when Indian Cricket team persisted too long with players that are talented. In this era of cutthroat competition,you are expected to perform in the limited chances you get.
There are other youngsters too who are aspiring to become the next kohli, rohit, dhoni. There is no dearth of talent in this new crop of players. Shubman Gill has to remain at the top if he has to make a name like Virat Kohli.
