Most people who’ve travelled on the I5 interstate between Los Angeles and San Francisco will not have failed to notice a large steer farm, with the nice folksy sounding name of the Harris Ranch
It’s difficult not to notice it because you can smell it miles before you can see it.
It’s where cattle, mostly steers, are reared in industrial numbers in unpleasant, unsanitary, and overcrowded conditions before being made into burgers. A few years ago, a Harris Ranch worker turned whistle-blower reported that the USDA was turning a blind-eye to the use of illegal levels of growth hormones and antibiotics.
So the answer to your question Why does the US have lower food standards than the UK and Europe? is probably that the FDA and the USDA are in the pockets of the food giants, in the same way that the FAA is (or at least was) in the pocket of Boeing.
Update: Whistle-blower FDA reference changed to USDA… my faulty memory!
