Because she is in Congress. Before she was in congress she was tending bar. She was the smart bartender with a double major degree in economics and international relations from BU so she could speak on a variety of subjects, but she undoubtedly knew how to maximize tips by speaking tactfully.
That picture is after she got elected. As young and pretty as she looks in that picture, she was even younger when she worked at Flats Fix. I can’t find a picture of her working, but I got this picture of the bar from what appears to be their site:
See the poster? I think that says a lot about the target clientele. I bet more than one Republican sat at that bar and asked AOC if that was her in the poster. And I bet she flashed a nice big smile and got a nice big tip so she could help her widowed mom keep her house, because that was why she was working there while doing her political volunteer work after college.
I bet the Republicans who sat at that bar thought she was amazing. They probably tried to show off by speaking Spanish with her and talking about Cancun. Maybe some Republicans did not like her: the wives/partners of the Republicans chatting her up at the bar. But I bet she was very popular. If she had stayed there they would have loved her. They would have thought she was incredibly smart and had a bright future. And if I am wrong about her speaking tactfully, I think Republicans would still have loved her even if she spouted Marxist rhetoric, because they would have found it endearing.
Only when she actually started campaigning and appealing to the majority of Queens voters did they start to hate her. And she spoke against Trump, which is very popular in Queens because he is from there so they know him well. But people elsewhere do not like that and they think the politicians from Queens should be acceptable to voters from everywhere. And now she is a powerful woman. So they jump on every thing she says and mock her for her dance videos, which they probably watch and rewatch and only pretend not to enjoy.
