There is a simple fact that unfortunately I need to keep saying.

They hired Emma Watson based on her acting ability more than her appearance.

This movie was hellaciously expensive, and was designed to kick off a whole franchise. In order for these films to be successful, they needed to find child actors who could become stars. This is not an easy thing to do. If you end up watching films with child stars, good child acting is rare. This group managed to get two really good actors as stars and a third that’s pretty good and well-fit for the role. They also generally did well with the rest of the children.

Imagine if this movie had someone who fit the look from the book better but couldn’t act as well. It would have seriously harmed the movie.

When she was younger, she wasn’t that great. Maybe a little above average, but nothing special.

Finally, Emma Watson today is what I call “Hollywood average”. If you compare her to the top models and movie stars she doesn’t hold up. But she’s way more attractive than the people I see on a daily basis. For a lot of people, this is more attractive than the big stars because it’s more relatable.
