Why do most feminist movies flop?

There is a very simple answer to this question and it has nothing to do with all the petulant whinging of insecure men who are afraid of strong women.

Why do most feminist movies flop?

Because most movies of all types flop.

In fact, 80% of all movies lose money. Every year there are 600–700 movies made and of those only about 200 receive a decent release. Most of those lose money. The rare blockbusters are what make up for all this Hollywood red ink.

What do testosterone driven movies such as The Lone Ranger, John Carter, Monster Trucks, Jack the Giant Slayer, and Transformers: The Last Knight all have in common?

They all lost more than a whopping $100 million each.

Not far behind are guy-flicks 47 Ronin, The Adventures of Pluto Nash, The Alamo, and R.I.P.D, each losing in excess of $90 million.

Yet, where are the Quora questions about why most male movies flop?

Denis Villeneuve put Columbia Pictures $80 million into the hole with Blade Runner 2049, yet he had no problem landing the gig as director of the latest version of Dune, even though the original 1984 Dune was also a box office bomb. There is no shortage of testosterone in any of these movies.

On the other hand, Wonder Woman was the highest-grossing superhero origin story film of all time and the highest-grossing summer release of 2017. The female driven Divergent series, Resident Evil series, and Hunger Games franchise, have made a combined total of just under $2 billion domestically.

Onestudy of films between 2014–2017 showed that female-led movies actually outperformed  those with a male lead at the box office.

Frozenmade more money than Iron Man 3; Alice in Wonderland out earned The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey; Maleficent with Angelina Jolie had a bigger box office than Tom Hank’s The Da Vinci Code; and Sandra Bullock’s Gravity outperformed Chris Evan’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

The 25 Highest Grossing Female Driven Movies of All Time

Thelmaand Louise, Terminator II, Silence of the Lambs, Kill Bill, The Devil Wears Prada, Erin Brockovich, Bend it Like Beckham, and Aliens are just some of the films with strong, kick-ass feminist leads that have been commercial and artistic successes.

So come on boys. Don’t you think it is time to stop whining about all the mean girls who are no longer interested in just being arm candy and playing the love interest in your comic book fantasies?
