Why did Prince William have second thoughts about Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge?

Why does any young man have second thoughts about a woman they love and are dating? Because what they have might not be as good as what’s available out there, or they might want to play the field longer if they met the right woman early on in their life. I think Prince William loved Catherine Middleton, but they had met rather early on, after their gap year, and I cannot say exactly when they became intimate, but maybe they were twenty? Twenty is young to man with a huge destiny, who might feel like he doesn’t want to “settle”. Also, his father and step-mother may have had a hand in it.

Below is William dancing with Catherine….

When Prince William left the confines of university, he began Army Officer training at Sandhurst in 2006, and he found most of his time consumed. He did make time to see Catherine, but in 2007 Prince William wasn’t sure about their future and broke things off. He was in the Blues and Royals, which was coined the Booze and Royals and having fun going out in town rather than driving to meet Middleton in London or her parents’ home was what William preferred.

Prince William was enjoying himself around Dorset, drinking and dancing on weekends out. At the same time, Camilla the new Duchess of Cornwall wanted to win the affection of Britain, but the nation was focused on the now more than five year relationship between William and Catherine Middleton. A worried and troubled Camilla reportedly wanted William to end things with Catherine, to give her a chance to win over the media.

Coincidentally, Prince Charles took his eldest son aside and told him it wasn’t fair to Catherine Middleton to string her along. If Prince William was not going to marry her soon, Charles urged William to break things off with her. The paparazzi waited for young Catherine, and it was a lot to deal with and yet she was doing fairly well with it. It should be noted that one of the reasons why William wished to wait to marry was he had always told the press he wouldn’t even think of marrying before he was thirty or around that age.

In 2007, Prince William and Catherine were only twenty-five. He still needed to learn how to fly helicopters with the Air Force, and then he wanted to have a career before he became a full-time working royal. Prince William needed to make sure he wasn’t settling, because Queen Elizabeth told William he simply could not divorce. William knew how his parents’ divorce had cost the popularity of the monarchy, and the Queen said he could not be the next heir to divorce. She didn’t know if the monarchy could withstand another messy divorce, and William had to be certain.

The prince broke up with Catherine in 2007, and while he was out having a grand time with many different women who were throwing themselves at him, Catherine decided not to sit at home and cry. She looked sexy, dressing less as a date of a prince and more as a single young woman looking for a fun time, and Pippa was now out of university and in London too. Catherine’s photos were taken by the paparazzi who still followed her around.

Now the paps had a gold mine in telling the story of the ex-girlfriend of Prince William, and he saw the images in the news. It was hard to miss. During this time, Catherine agreed to help with an athletic group of young women who were training to row across the English Channel, which meant 6:30 a.m. training sessions on the Thames. Catherine enjoyed this very much, and the paparazzi also found her there and took photos of all the women rowing.

None of this escaped Prince William’s notice. He saw how gorgeous his ex looked while rowing, and he certainly was bothered by all the men who were throwing themselves at Catherine. Dancing with his ex, touching his ex. Thinking about doing things with the woman he still loved. Those images stayed with William, who realized he had found the right one for him, and he had broken up with her!

After no more than two or three months had passed, Prince William was telling Catherine what a monumental mistake he had made in breaking up with her. Catherine had a few stipulations before agreeing to date him again. They would be serious, as in marrying serious, because she was not giving any more time to their relationship unless it ended with a wedding ring on her finger. Prince William told her he was in this for good, and she just had to wait for the right time.

Comments Catherine has made indicated she did not want William marrying someone who didn’t love him as she did. If we look at the couple now, what strikes me is how often Catherine is doing her thing, looking around, and William is looking right at his wife. It’s a love match through and through. Prince William, coming from a broken home, wanted to make sure he had the same kind of love that Carole and Michael Middleton have. A love that endures, that cares, is kind, nurturing and is all about enjoying each other.

Prince William, true to his word, did not ask Catherine to marry him until October 2010 when they were on holiday in Africa. He informed the Queen later, after they returned. William is a romantic. He asked Michael Middleton’s permission to marry his daughter, and with her father’s blessing, William kept his mother’s engagement ring with him while waiting for the right moment. Their engagement was announced by Clarence House in November and the world was thrilled! A royal wedding would happen the following April. William and Catherine married on 29 April 2011.

This is a love story for the ages. I hope their three children are so lucky in finding that kind of love.

See? This is love. Very much so.
