Why are Pirates of the Caribbean fans angry with Margot Robbie?

Hi.

Back in June of this year, it was announced that Margot Robbie would star in a Pirates of the Caribbean movie. It will not be part of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but something separate.

This comes after an announcement in 2018 that a Pirates of the Caribbean reboot is being developed with Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced all 5 movies, stating that he does not know if Johnny Depp will be involved in the project.

Fans worlwide showed their anger and how upset they were by making the hashtag #nojohnnynopirates trend on twitter and making online petitions for Disney to bring him back as Jack Sparrow. It’s still unknown if he will be back as the lovable, rum addict, ship sinking master, ladies man, Jack Sparrow.

They were not angry at Margot Robbie but with Disney. Until now.

Fans of the franchise got very upset after they read what Margot Robbie said in a recent interview with Collider:

Lot of girl power. No, it’s too early to talk about it… I love Christina, obviously. I’m not a producer on Pirates, so I’ll sit back and kind of wait for the process… No we’re really, really excited at the prospect of adding obviously a very key female element to that world.

Since the first movie, Pirates of the Caribbean always had “girl power”, with strong female characters. The strongest of all being PIRATE KING Elizabeth Turner.

Calypso, also a strong female character who cursed Davy Jones. She’s also among the fans favorite characters:

Every movie had a strong female character to fight alongside Jack Sparrow. They were not damsels in distress and they could handle themselves. So fans are very upset at this comment by Margot Robbie as she doesn’t seem to notice that what she’s trying to achieve is already there.

Thanks for reading.
