Who are some actors who seriously regret turning down iconic movie roles?

Jennifer Lopez a.k.a JLo

This year, JLo’s Oscars snub for her role in Hustlers was felt by many. However, while I think she might be a charismatic performer on stage, she’s an “okay” actress. Decent enough, and she can do comedies too, but one can’t expect her to turn in a Kate Winslet or Rachel Weisz level delivery.

For the 2002 movie Unfaithful, the role of the attractive cheating wife Connie Sumner was originally offered to JLo. For reasons unbeknownst to us, JLo turned it down. The offer eventually went to none other than the gorgeous Diane Lane, who turned in a breathtaking performance.

Though the film received mixed reviews, Diane’s performance was widely praised, and was notably nominated for the Academy Awards for Best Actress. This film also grossed $119million, well above its $50million budget.

And who can forget this iconic train ride home, after Connie’s first rendezvous with her Italian lover? Diane successfully captured the mixture of guilt and thrill of an extramarital affair.

No wonder earlier this year, JLo said in an interview that she wanted to shoot her toe off for turning this role down. The regret is strong in this.

We feel you, JLo. But it’s unfair to say that just because Diane got nominated in the Academy Awards for her delivery, the same would happen if JLo had accepted.

But then again, around this time, JLo’s singing career had also taken off. While Diane mesmerised us in the movie theatre. I guess it all worked out for the best for both ladies.
