Which country is shaped the weirdest?

I’m surprised no one has mentioned France.

At first glance it looks pretty normal. Aside from Corsica, there’s nothing unusual about the shape of this country (no offense meant to Corsica!):

Looks kind of like a hexagon, doesn’t it? In fact that’s such a motif of French self identity that they put it on the coins. Behold the French euro coin:

If that were all there was to France I wouldn’t even mention it. But it’s not. This is a map of France:

France’s longest border isn’t with Spain or Belgium, it’s with Brazil. The French région of French Guiana shares a 730 km border with Brazil, while the mainland’s longest border is with Spain, and at only 657 kilometers it’s cut in two by the Franco-Andorran border. (See Borders of France - Wikipedia for more details)France also shares a border with the Kingdom of the Netherlands, but it’s on the Caribbean island of St Martin/Sint Maarten. France also shares a maritime border with Canada due to St Pierre et Miquelon lying just off the coast of Newfoundland.

As you can see, bits of France also lie in the Indian and South Pacific oceans. Britain has a lot of overseas territories but they are not integral parts of the United Kingdom. All of the areas shaded blue on this map are integral parts of the French Republic, and their inhabitants are French citizens, equal in every way to inhabitants of Paris or Marseilles. Or even Corsica.

France is definitely the most weirdly shaped country on the planet. It’s truly the land where the sun never sets. Somewhere in the world the sun is always shining on France.
