Palau location

So for those who heard this country for the first time, Palau is a small archipelago country located in the Pacific Ocean. It was colonized by Germany, Japan, and finally the USA. In 1994, this country gained independence.

When I first time saw the pictures of Palau capital city, I couldn’t believe that the country which only has a population of around 17.000 has magnificent buildings.

Another fact that mesmerizes the city is located in Melekeok state which only has a population around 270. Moreover, this city doesn't have any permanent resident, postal office, restaurants, and even shops exist in this capital city.

Before Palau gained its independence in 1994, a relocation capital city plan had been planned in 1979. In 1980s, leaders from Melekeok state persuaded the Palau government to build the new capital in Melekeok by offered Ngerulmud hill for new capital site. Later on this hill became the capital city of Palau.

The construction of new capital began in 1986 and was done by an engineering company from Hawaii. Unfortunately, it was halted for lack of engineers and architects, along with construction materials that must be imported. It restarted again in 2000 when Taiwan assisted the construction by pouring financial aid of $36 million. And in 2006, the Palau capital was officially relocated from Koror to Ngerulmund.

Even though those buildings are extremely splendid, the buildings were not designed to deal with a tropical climate and increased Palau’s debt. In 2013, the building ventilation was broken, which caused the mold infestation. Consequently, the employees got sick from it.

In 2011, a postal office was established in Ngerulmud, and it was only survived for two years. This was because of high expenses ($30.000), yet the revenue that it obtained small ($2000). The post office gained income from selling stamps.

It is nothing look like a capital city and more towards a government complex instead

I wrote about this peculiar capital city before on Bligger India
