The final scene of Midsommar.
All right, Midsommar is a movie about this girl called Dany whose family dies in a tragic accident. She ends up alone in the world, goes to live with her emotionally cold boyfriend Christian and when he travels to a rural commune in Sweden, she follows him because she’s traumatised and scared of being abandoned.
The whole movie, Dany gets ignored, is treated with hostility by Christian’s foolish friends and her feelings are dismissed despite the heavy toll her family’s demise has taken on her mind.
And yet, the commune hears her throughout the movie, they seemingly accept her without expecting nothing in return. They make her feel whole again, a part of something greater than herself. She can vent out all her grief without being demonised for it by them.
They even accompany her through her mourning.
They lift her up metaphorically and literally.
While they murder coldbloodedly the people that came to Sweden with her and rape her boyfriend.
The point is… she sees her boyfriend having sex (he was forced to it) with this chick and gets all panicked about it (understandably). The boyfriend gets drugged and is immobilised by the commune, that more than a commune fuctions truly as a murderous cult.
The poor dude gets trapped on a bear hide and Dani’s given the choice to spare him or to finish him in a maddening ritual where they celebrate the magic and allure of death or something of the sort.
In her heartbreak, she chooses to kill him. After that, all goes down hill pretty quickly. Christian’s put inside a triangle-shaped yellow building with the defiled corpses of his once friends. Then, he’s burnt to death alongside two cult members that thought the affair would be painless but got lied to by their friends and family.
After that, the Haarga start making a mockery of the situation, acting as if they were burning, too. Dani starts coughing as if she had tuberculosis, parading around the place wrapped inside a giant flower dress that makes her look like a monster.
And after watching all that horror, after experiencing so much loss and emotional suffering, she comes and smiles as she sees her old life being vanquished and obliterated.
WTF!!!
Now she’s alone, trapped inside a cult that will quite literally kill her when she gets old enough to be considered useless. Now she will be used so the Haarga can pop more brainwashed babies out of her womb. And boy, the implications of that statement are terribly horrible… Now, she’ll be even more abused, and the worst thing is that she won’t even notice it.
I loved this movie! Pretty astounding if you ask me. The final scenes of Hereditary, The Witch and The Lighthouse are dreadful, too!
