David Goggins is a retired US Navy SEAL who has accomplished seemingly impossible athletic feats with very little training.
He tried to enter the Badwater ultramarathon, a 135 mile trek starting from Death Valley in California and ending at 8000+ feet at the foot of Mount Whitney. The organizers wouldn’t let him join since it was an invitation only event.
So instead, he joined an ultramarathon in San Diego, finishing the 101 mile in 19 hours despite it being the first marathon he ever ran.
This effort got him into the Boston Marathon, and later the Hurt-100 ultramarathon in Hawaii, one of the hardest such events in the world. Only 23 contestants managed to finish the whole race, and he was one of them.
Finally now being able to enter the Badwater event, he took on the challenge and finished 5th overall, an absolutely stunning achievement for someone with so little experience.
Goggins later continued this streak by entering the Ultraman World Championships Triathlon in Hawaii, where contestants are told to go through the 320 mile course by foot, bike, and swimming. Goggins biked the 200+ mile section on a rented bike despite never doing so competitively before.
He finished 2nd.
I recommend all of you to check out his life story, because it is quite amazing by itself. These athletic achievements actually don’t hold much weight when you start to understand how he got through his early life.
