What is the largest known star?

An absolute monster of a star called: UY Scuti

It’s 1700 times bigger* than our sun!

Let’s put that into perspective, here’s our planet (Earth) next to our sun (true to scale):

A close up of the previous photo in case your mind isn’t fully blown yet:

Here is our sun next to UY Scuti:

If we replaced our sun with UY Scuti, it would extend past the orbit of Jupiter:

If the Earth was the size of a tennis ball 🎾, UY Scuti would be this big:

Do you feel small yet?

Stay frosty =)

*1700 times the sun’s diameter but in terms of volume over 5 billion suns could fit inside UY Scuti! Wow! 🤩

Edit: As of 2020, UY Scuti has been officially dethroned as the largest star by Stephenson 2–18, another red supergiant with a diameter that is 2150 bigger than our sun and in terms of volume over 10 billion suns could fit inside of it. To give you some perspective, if we were to put Stephenson 2–18 into the middle of our solar system, it would extend past the orbit of Saturn! What a beast! Here is a graphical size comparison between the two and our sun:
