What is the best dessert from Egypt?

There are two famous sayings in Egypt;

The first: if you drink of the Nile, you’ll come back.

The second: the one who built Egypt was a dessert chef.

You can get two things out of that, Egypt is very sweet….

And we are very modest! :)

However whether those sayings are true or not, you can enjoy a variety of tasty and heartly made desserts in Egypt. I’ll mention some of them.

This is Mango Kunafah, eaten cold.

Kunafah is thin threads made of flour and fried a little in butter to be crunchy, then either honey or syrup is added to it.

Then fresh cream and mango take turns.

It's so delicious and refreshing too, I can't get enough of it.

The traditional Kunafah is available also, whether filled with cream, nuts or cheese.

I make the cream and cheese ones at home, I can’t escape making them because everyone requests them.

An Idiot’s Guide to the Origin of Kunafa

You can find it in different shapes and flavors.

I have to move to another sweet or I won’t be able to finish this answer.

Om Ali

It’s made of thin crunchy layers of something like bread, but so thin you can see through it, with milk, sugar, cream, vanilla and nuts. It’s eaten very hot from the oven.

It literally means the mother of Ali, which is said to have a historical story. In short: after the death of the last Ayyubid dynasty ruler his very strong and ambitious wife Shajar al-Durr ruled, but the sultans every where got bugged and sent to her “If you don't have a man to rule, we'll send you one”!!

So, she had to take a husband. She chose the one she thought would be easy to control and would be an accepted frontier.

He had a wife and a kid called Ali. However, he had a plan too. To get rid of the queen and be the king and bring his family.

The queen was very smart and quick; she killed him but his wife Om Ali took revenge and killed her.

To celebrate she made a dessert and spreaded it all over Egypt, and that’s how it got it’s name.
