Reading through some of these answers terrifies me.
Let’s be clear: this isn’t a protest, it’s a riot.
It does not matter what democrat protesters have done in the past.
This is wrong.
There is absolutely no justification for targeting a legally elected government.
And there is absolutely no justification for Donald Trump to have encouraged these people.
As a Republican who has frequently defended the president and others who support him, I’m embarrassed.
Trump lost the election but he would rather put national security at stake than admit it.
His we-will-never-concede rhetoric is selfish and divisive.
Because our nation is divided, because our nation is split in two.
But what terrifies me just as much as the refusal to condemn this behavior is the belief that Democracy is dead.
It’s easy to see the chasm between Democrats and Republicans, to see differences that have devastated friendships and families.
It’s harder to see the similarities.
But they’re there.
I believe that regardless of party, the vast majority of Americans have the legacy of Democracy ingrained in them.
We look at problems and rather than calling for a strong-man, we turn to the same processes that have protected us for more than two hundred years.
That’s why there was record high voter turnout for this election. Rioters are a fraction compared to these peaceful millions.
The loudest voices are the most extreme.
But this is not the fall of democracy.
When I turned on Fox News, expecting denial or justification, the reporter instead called out those at the Capitol. Fox is notorious for blind defense of Trump. There was no defense.
This is not what Americans want and this is not the fall of democracy.
