We Vietnamese always say that we are a small country and even our textbooks always teach our children that Vietnam is so small.
I guess that’s what happens when your neighbor is so big.
Even the poetic name for our country - the Southern land - is a reference to that big country.
Although on the internet, we jokingly call ourselves Dong Lao (East Laos) as a self-deprecating humor.
With nearly 100 million people in population, and with a land area that is all coastal, I guess we can be considered as one of the mid sized countries.
We are blessed with two river deltas, that is the Red and the Mekong (Nine Dragon) Rivers. Such rich soil and fertile land gave us two big cities, each with close to 10 million residents.
City in between the rivers (Hanoi)
City of the cotton plants (Ho Chi Minh City)
The topography of Vietnam is so diverse, from its traditional heartland in the fertile, flat plains of the Red River to dramatic mountains, pristine beaches, rolling sand dunes, and the typical jungles seen in American movies.
The flat plain of the Red River delta. Despite little geographic barrier, this place managed to repel the Mongol invasions 3 times.
The mountains and lushed green landscape of the Northern region.
The pristine beaches of the central coast.
The coconut jungles of Southern Vietnam.
Interestingly, Vietnam is the second country in the world with the largest deposit of rare Earth resources.

Despite being 30 times smaller than China, we have half the amount of rare earth deposits as them, and tie with Brazil for the second place.
Vietnam has 54 ethnic groups, but the majority of us (89%) belong to Kinh ethnic group. This word means Capital people, because historically Vietnamese rulers wanted to separate his subjects from the tribal people living in the highlands.
The traditional dress of the Hmong people. They are the native people of Northwest Vietnam.
The traditional dress of the Dao people. They are the native people of Northern Vietnam.
The traditional dress of the Cham people. They are the Muslim native people of Central Vietnam.
The traditional dress of Kinh people. They are the majority of Vietnamese.
And 40% of Vietnamese people have the same last name - Nguyễn
I guess we are Nguyen big family - so not that small
Just imagine how many people in this crowd are Nguyen.
I really hope that one day we would stop considering ourselves as a small country because the potential of Vietnam is so large.
