However

Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth are not real, but are largely based on Burt Reynolds and Hal Needham, who met in the 1960s while working television but by 1969 were both looking at the end of their careers as their transition from television to movies didn’t work out.

Reynolds was a regular on the long running series “Gunsmoke” but left the series to try a movie career. His early work wasn’t well regarded and his first television series only lasted 17 episodes. By 1969, he was making a living doing small parts in movies. Hal Needham was his best friend and regular stunt man, but after Westerns there was less work for him.

However, both men hit their stride in the 1970s making a series of stunt-filled movies that Reynolds starred in and Needham wrote and directed. They both became very rich. Reynolds continued acting and for a while was the top box office draw in Hollywood. Needham moved into charity work.
