What are the special cuisines in Tamil Nadu?

There are many cuisines in Tamil Nadu.

Though the staple diet of present Tamil people is Rice,the ancestors of present day Tamils ate more of millets and cereals.

Depending on the availability of food,vegetables and pulses,the food also changes in various regions of Tamil Nadu.

But you should surely try these 5 main and special cuisines from Tamil Nadu

1.Chettinad cuisine

Chettinadu cuisine is the most famous and world famous cuisine mainly for the non vegeterian dishes prepared. This cuisine emerged from the Chettiar householls(a wealthy buissness community of TN)in the Karaikudi region.

The chettiars or buissnessmen travelled far for trades and brought out the combination of the local and various cuisines from south east Asian countries to form the Chettinad cuisine.

Dishes like Paal Payasam,Paniyaram,Utthappam,Iddiappam,chettinad Kozhi varuval and many such dishes emerged from Chettinad area.

2. Madurai cuisine.

The oldest cuisines of Tamil Nadu,Madurai cuisine is famous for various dishes like Madurai Idli,Karidosai,Parutthi Paal,Jigarthanda,Muttai Parotta,etc.I will suggest you to try the chicken and mutton recipes from this cuisine.

3. Nanjil Nadu cuisine.

This cuisine is from the Kanyakumari region.

The dishes of this region is a combination of both Kanyakumari with influence of Kerala cuisine.(Especially the use of coconut and coconut oil).

I will recommend you to try the fish curry as Kanyakumari is a region where the three seas meet.

The other dishes that should be tried are Appam,Kinnathappam,Nanjilnadu meen curry,Puttu,etc.

4. Kongunadu cuisine

Kongunadu cuisine is a cuisine from Kongunadu region of Tamil Nadu that is Coimbatore and its surrounding areas.

The cuisine mainly uses lentils, coconut and curry leaves and various spices.

5. Madras or Tondaimandalam cuisine.

Again this cuisine developed in the Tondaimandalam region of Tamil Nadu. The dishes of this region consists of little extra chillies and the Kuzhambu prepared in this region is little spicy .(I belong to this region and we prepare Tondai mandalam dishes).It also includes the dishes of Turkish Muslims who settled in this region for trade.
