What are some similarities and differences between U.S. and Chinese cultures?

Patriotism: People from both countries are incredibly patriotic. You can see national flags hanging everywhere among houses or shops in both countries.

Both countries love to boast their achievements in science, engineering and space exploration. You can find countless propaganda in museums and monuments in many cities in both countries. But in addition, China also boasts its history as much as its engineering.

Scouting: Both have a scouting culture for the education of their kids. The US has various scout organisations. And China has “Young Pioneers” and “Youth League” in all different schools.

Difference: American scouts love to go to the wild and hiking. Chinese counterpart has to grow trees, clean rubbish and help the elders.

Car preference: Both countries love to buy big cars. Americans love to drive their huge pickup trucks (not just red necks). Chinese love to drive their huge SUVs. This is because most of their city roads are straight, longer and wider.

Huge infrastructure: Why do both countries love bigger cars? Because both are big countries with massive lands. Both built massive expressways and massive overpasses:
An overpass in California :

An overpass in Chongqing :

Repetitive town names: People in both countries are so lazy and less creative in naming their town names. As a result, you can find countless towns, villages, streets having the same name. In the USA, you can find many “Washington”, “Franklin”, “Clinton”, “Springfield” etc. In China, you can find thousands of towns having the name called “New Village” or “Surname + Village” or “Surname + Field”.

“Big Country Syndrome”

Both countries are huge and populous. So common people from both countries have developed a similar syndrome called “Big country syndrome”. Sorry, I’m talking about the common people, not the educated people in both countries.

“Cultural ignorant”

Americans: “Let’s go and have some Chinese food! So how about this Bibimbap mixed with Califonia Sushi roll dipped with sweet and sour jam?”

Americans: “(In the UK) Excuse me? I think this air conditioner is broken. It says it is 25 degrees. How can I change that to 77 degrees?”

Chinese: “Look at this Indian restaurant! Let’s have some curries. Waiter! Do you have beef curries? No beef curry? Do you have pork curry? No? What a crap Indian restaurant it is! Let’s leave this place and have some pizza with Duran instead.”

Chinese: “Christmas is coming! Give me a red packet through Wechat! Let’s have an Apple on the Christmas Eve and have sex later. And yes. we can order some chicken wings from New Orleans.”

“Geographic ignorant”

(2008 News)Russia invades Georgia in 2008 for the South Ossetia War. Americans: “Oh my god! Atlanta would be in bloodshed!”

American: “So you are from Taiwan? That’s awesome! I heard you have lots of ladyboys. Your food is great too. I love green curry with prawns!.

Chinese: “So you are from Texas(德州)? That’s awesome! You must be eating chickens every day(德州扒鸡).”

Chinese: “(To American black people) Are you from Africa?” “No, I’m from the USA. I am born in the USA.” “Oh, I still think you are from Africa”

“You should speak my language”

Both think they are living in the centre of the world. So when they travel abroad to a foreign country and meet local people, they naturally thought the locals should speak their own language.

For example, when an American travels to Thailand and meets the locals. He will talk with locals using English. He would be annoyed if the locals don’t speak English. Similarly when a Chinese travels to Thailand and meets the locals. He will talk with locals using Chinese. He would be annoyed if the locals don’t speak Chinese. Both people don’t bother to learn other languages.

“really? Holy, I don't give a dame fuck about what others think of me”

This is why some of the Chinese tourists and American tourists get bad reputations in the rest of the world, especially in France. In China, this kind of people is called “mental giant babies”.

Finally, both presidents love their walls:

Besides similarities, the rest of them are pretty much differences.
