What are some food items extremely popular in your country but hard to come by elsewhere?

It’s not soo much of a country thing, rather the an ethnic thing.

Where I grew up, we had one fish which is known as the king of the fish.

It is super expensive, and everyone would die to have a piece.

While growing up, our happiest sunday used to be when dad would bring home a whole fish and mom would prepare it in several different ways.

We have festivals dedicated to the fish.

It is THE most amazing, tasty, oily, aromatic, rich fleshy sweet water fish you can have.

Yet this fish is unheard of anywhere else in the world.

And if you are not a Bengali, you have no clue what I am talking about.

Let me show you:

You can cook it in various ways, but always have it with white rice.

My favourite way is cooked with mustard and it looks like this:

You can also create a lighter version with eggplants called “jhol” which will look like this:

You can show steam it in a banana leaf, called Paturi:

You can fry it and just have rice with couple of green chillies, salt and the oil in which it was fried:

If you are ever in the NYC area and want to try it out, let me know, my wife makes a mean version of these dishes.

Bon Apetit!

Edit: The fish in English is called Hilsha. In native Bengali it’s called “illish”. Read more here: Ilish - Wikipedia

Funfact: The fish contributes more than 1% of GDP of Bangladesh. One single fish!
