What are the most anticipated movies of 2021?

Following 2019’s cinematic treasure-trove, 2020 was a return to normalcy. Movies weren’t at the forefront of culture. How could they be?

And they won’t be for a while yet; a pandemic tends to have that effect. But a new year brings with it renewed hope, and hopefully, theatrical releases.

There are plenty of reasons to be excited about the state of cinema in 2021. Below are ten of them.

Note: Movies that were set to release in 2020 but have since been pushed to 2021 will not feature on this list.

10. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (Tom Gormican)

9. Nightmare Alley (Guillermo Del Toro)

8. Sherlock Holmes 3 (Dexter Fletcher),

7. Babylon (Damien Chazelle)

6. The King’s Man (Matthew Vaughn)

5. The Tragedy of Macbeth (Joel Coen)

4. Killers of The Flower Moon (Our lord and saviour).

3. Those Who Wish Me Dead

A female-driven neo-western set against a wildfire in the Montana wilderness.

Taylor Sheridan is my second-favourite screenwriter currently working.

After a self-assured directorial debut with 2017’s haunting Wind River, he returns to further stamp his authority over a sub-genre he’s quickly making his own – the neo-western.

Those Who Wish Me Dead is also part of Angelina Jolie’s twin-pronged comeback into the mainstream, Eternals being the other. And that adds another layer of anticipation.

2. The Last Duel

King Charles VI declares that Knight Jean de Carrouges settle his dispute with his squire by challenging him to a duel.

24 years after writing Good Will Hunting, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon return as screenwriters and actors in this historical thriller. And they’ve brought along some serious talent with them.

The Last Duel is directed by Sir Ridley Scott and features Adam Driver and Jodie Comer alongside Damon and Affleck. Oof.

It could just as well flatter to deceive, but there is great promise here. And it has my interest piqued.

1. Mission Impossible 7

The seventh entry in the long-running Mission: Impossible series.

Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise have combined to outrageously entertaining results.

Since 2011’s Ghost Protocol, the franchise scaled new heights, and it hasn't looked back since, with each new instalment improving on the former, which is a remarkable feat.

The series peaked with Fallout, one of the best and most purely entertaining blockbusters of the past decade. Truly, I thought it was outstanding.

And if McQuarrie and Cruise can keep the upward trend going, then Mission Impossible 7 is going to be something incredible.

And that is very exciting.

Thanks for Reading
