Idris Elba hated playing Heimdall in the Thor movies.
I suppose he liked playing Heimdall at first, I mean he did willingly sign the contract. But after the first Thor movie didn't perform well, his character was not as fleshed out as he'd hoped, and he got bigger and more meaningful roles, he began to dislike playing Heimdall.
Calling it “dislike" seems to be putting it lightly. He thought it was torture.
This is what he had said in an interview with The Telegraph:
(Prior to this interview, he had been in South Africa for eight months filming Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom where he played Nelson Mandela. He had to jump back into Thor reshoots the day after arriving back in England)
And in the actual scene my hair was different, my… [Sigh] I was like, ‘This is torture, man. I don’t want to do this.’ My agent said: ‘You have to, it’s part of the deal.’
I’m actually falling down from a spaceship, so they had to put me in harness in this green-screen studio. And in between takes I was stuck there, fake hair stuck on to my head with glue, this fucking helmet, while they reset.
And I’m thinking: ‘24 hours ago, I was Mandela.’ … Then there I was, in this stupid harness, with this wig and this sword and these contact lenses. It ripped my heart out."[1]
He was referring to this particular scene:
His character met his end in Infinity War, so Idris doesn't have to worry about playing Heimdall anymore.
Of course, unless he gets resurrected in Thor 4.[2]
I'd give anything to play Heimdall.
