Yes it was. Unfortunately the worst part of it all is knowing that both Wonder Woman movies were directed by Patty Jenkins, which is kind of hard to believe at first because the quality from one movie to the other changes very drastically. Now I’m about to list some of the reasons why WW84 is terrible.
SPOILERS AHEAD
Number 1: The opening sequence;
The movie starts out with a flashback of Diana as a kid, participating in an olympic competition with older Amazonians. She cheated and then got reprimended by Antiope(Robin Wright) right after it.
The lesson she got from all this is that “you shouldn’t cheat in order to win” and “Nothing good is ever born from lies”. You see, the message is actually interesting but doesn’t really make any sense because those lessons she learned have nothing to do with the rest of the film. It even seems like the opening belongs to a whole different movie.
Number 2: Steve Trevor, the king of cringe;
(The image above speaks for itself)
First of all, Diana never made a direct wish to the magic stone for it to bring her beloved Steve back, so his return makes no sense. Second of all, he comes back in someone else’s body, that’s actually an interesting concept that should have countless moral implications that are never explored, because his character only consists of making flat jokes over the entire movie. He doesn’t even have chemistry with Diana anymore, so what’s really the point.
Oh… speaking of which:
Number 3: MAGIC STONE;
Out of all the plot points you could’ve written for the movie’s overrall narrative, you decide to turn a stone that grants wish as the main focus of the story? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
The idea is that it can grants you anything you want but you’ll lose something in the process. Interesting idea, right? Not really. It seems like some people suffer consequences but others don’t for whatever reason.
Diana is vunerable to bullets now, but I don’t buy it for a second that she was invulnerable to bullets before. Her former teacher Antiope died after getting hit on the chest by a bullet, that just proves that at the very least, amazons aren’t bulletproof. She might be the daughter of Zeus, but bullets are very hard to dodge, they’re very fast and you just can’t keep track of all of them Diana. Also, if she was bulletproof from the start, there would be no need to dodge them with her bracelletes.
Also also, it is previously established that the stone can only grant you ONE wish, but this changes overtime just for the sake of convenience. At first I though that Cheetah(Kristen Wiig) would lose her human appearance as a result of her wish but apparently not, first she wished to become like Diana, this wish just robbed her of her kind heart and likable personality. And then she wishes to become a cheetah ON PURPOSE. It’s so stupid. You can’t even make that up.
Number 4: Retcons
Princess Diana (Gal Gadot) has developed many great skills since the last movie. She can fly on command without using the golden armor from “Kingdom Come”, grab lightnings using her lasso of truth and turn objects invisible. Not only that but she also has an invisible airplane now and has a very dope golden armor which can make her take twice the amount of damage without getting hurt.
Damn dog, that’s very impressive! But wait a second…if she had all those abilities and magical objects ever since the year of 1984, how come she didn’t use any of it when she was fighting Steppenwolf many decades later? That would’ve come in very handy Diana.
Number 5: Maxwell Lord
This is probably the biggest bummer the movie had in my opinion. The character of Maxwell Lord - a not so successful entrepreneur - is uninteresting, cartoonish, pretentious, inconsistent, greedy, repetitive and obnoxious. He’s neither threatening enough to be a memorable villain nor interesting enough for you to like him. He’s just annoying the whole time he’s on the screen.
Why you might ask? Well, someone of you may not know this but Pedro Pascal who plays Lord just happen to be a Donald Trump hater. I read in an article a few months back about an interviewed with Pascal where he openly admitted that his performance in this movie was inspired by the orange man himself.
You may not notice this unless you play very close attention to the movie’s hidden messages. but it all comes together in a scene where Maxwell Lord refers to himself as a LOSER.
That’s right, Patty Jenkins made this entire movie so she could show Trump the middle finger. HAHAHAHAHAHA, hilarious… not.
I don’t know about you guys, but everytime i want to watch a movie based on a comic book, i’m not looking forward to goddamn politics in the movie. This annoyed me so much when I watched Joker, and now history repeats itself once more.
Of course this is just my personal take on the whole experience, if you enjoyed the movie I don’t really have a problem with that. But I do think that in order fo you to like this movie you’re gonna have to find a way to overlook every single thing I have mentioned above, and other details that I probably forgot to mention at all.
Birds of Prey was actually better than WW1984. What a shame :(picture Source Google)
