But America “started” several centuries later after the European nations did. America had its benefits but also had to deal with other things. Their territorial placement is just one factor in the founding of a federated nation comprise of over 50 member states.
Also one factor is that America was not really 'colonized', it was 'settled’ in by the Europeans. Now because the population demographics changed from Native people to Europeans, they did inherit an educated populace, and superior technical know-how. This was not the case with 'colonized’ countries like India and most of SE Asia among others. They had some government structure ( albeit in the form of small or large kingdoms ) and hence the natives remained when these countries won independence.

The biggest advantage of the USA is probably the consolidation of power of 13 states into one nation, then growing that into effective 50+ countries in one nation.
In Civ terms, the US started the game late but had 13 cities to begin with.
Ever played a game of Civilization 5?
Actually if you ever play Civilization on any harder difficulties you’ll see that the more neighbors you have the easier it is to achieve victory.
Through both technology and resource trade, and acquisition of other nation cities and population. In Civ3 you could even make other nations captured workers to join your city and become your citizen. I remember I even destroyed other nation cities just to get a bunch of workers (that’s how destroying a city worked in civ3) that I could assimilate into my citizens.
One of the things that was really great about Civ4 (which is the best Civ thus far, bad UI aside) is that there were both plenty of resources to trade and a lot of reasons to do so, thus you could gain advantage not only by conquest.
Nations on remote continent always did poorly, no matter if run by AI or a player.
If you’re lucky when you choose the Earth map. You’ll start in the Americas with only one or two rivals against you.
Unlike in mainland Eurasia.
There would be a lot of money devoted to the development of one’s national economy and infrastructure when you don’t have to spend a significant amount of it towards sharp sticks when there’s no one to seriously threaten you.
That’s how lucky America is when it was just starting out.
