On her 21st birthday in 1947, she made the following pledge to the commonwealth: “I declare before you all, that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service, and to the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong.’’
We can still see that she has absolutely no intention of breaking that promise.
She served in the Auxiliary Territorial Unit during WW2, assisting with the War effort like everybody else. She served as both an ambulance driver and a mechanic, rather than hiding away in Sandringham like people expected her to. Princess Elizabeth got her hands messy along with the rest of the country, helping assist Britain through its darkest hour.
The Queen is a full-fledged wartime veteran.
Fourteen prime ministers of the UK have come and gone, and thirteen US presidents. The world has changed beyond recognition during the Queen’s reign, from large televisions to computers to smartphones. Nothing fazes this iconic woman.
In her 68 years as Queen, she’s never had a single gaffe or embarrassment. We don’t have to worry about our head of state making a bad impression on foreign leaders. We need not fear she might do something undignified at a dinner party.
There is so much to say about this remarkable woman, but it’s probably best to summarize her as ‘living history’. Before most of us came into the world, the Queen was here. She is, quite literally, more than most of us can imagine — the seemingly undying fact of a world we have never known ourselves.
Despite the ‘antics’ of her husband, children, grandchildren, she has hardly put a foot wrong.
As a constitutional monarch, the Queen cannot legally give orders or take sides on matters of state but she is probably the world’s most experienced executive mentor since she remains neutral on just about everything, and it’s difficult to dislike her.
We watched the Queen guide the country by always being a steady, and reliable presence. She has dealt with everything from the fall of the Empire, to Harry and Meghan’s recent departure, with grace and poise, quickly and adeptly.
