Is love a decision or a feeling?

Is being in love a feeling or a choice?

It starts out as a feeling, but slowly over time, it becomes a choice.

In the beginning, we often confuse being in love with falling in love.

Falling in love is the stage where everything is non-committal and hazy. You don’t think about the long-term. It hasn’t even occurred to you. All you do is to look into their eyes, twine your fingers with theirs, and think, “Man, so this is what it’s like being in love.”

But it’s not.

That’s not what being in love is like at all.

That’s just the beginning. That’s only the start.

Being in love is way harder.

Being in love starts when the honeymoon stage erodes away, and you start to get into the nitty-gritty of the relationship. It’s when long nights spent on the couch, week-long arguments, and constant misunderstandings become things you are more than familiar with.

Being in love is when you look at your partner, and you finally realize:

Love is actually a choice.

It’s a conscious decision. Being in love is no longer just a warm, fuzzy feeling, it’s commitment. It’s loving even when you don’t want to.

We constantly glamorize and romanticize being in love, but in the long-term, it’s nothing more than another thing we must tend to in our daily lives.

When you’re really in love with someone, you put up with all their nonsensical bullshit and flaws. You stay by their side, even when things get tough.

Being in love is somehow seeing the shine in someone, despite how much they dull over the years.

And after the long days and nights, the thick and thin, you look at the one you love, the one you chose to love, your choice.

And you think to yourself, “Man, so this is what it’s like being in love.”

Being in love is a choice. It’s extraneous and demanding, but with the right person, it can be one of the best things to ever experience in life.
