How do you feel about the term "Cultural Appropriation"?

This debate on cultural appropriation was recently ignited by Adele's attire in this picture

Here are my thoughts:

This is my grandma

She's playing with one of her wares at the Ocho Rios Craft market, a prime tourist port on the island. The craft market vendors make a living selling culture. The bikini worn by Adele and many other articles of clothing with the national flag are sold there.

This photo was taken by a German woman who kept in contact with nana. Many of the vendors keep picture logs of their customers and relish the opportunity to bond with foreigners over a love for our heritage.

That said, it must be mentioned that Jamaica's motto is: “out of many, one people” paired with the words of our reggae ambassador Bob Marley. “One love, one heart…” you'll quickly come to the realization that the idea of “cultural appropriation” in this context is laughable to true Jamaicans.

We are proud of our island and love when others share it. We will braid your hair, teach you the language, dress you in the black, green and gold, have you dancing to our rhythms, addicted to our food and be happier for it.

So with all due respect to the defenders of culture, this one isn't your fight.

God bless You all
