Did it seem that the insurrectionists got into the capitol way too easy?

I think yes. But unlike some, I don’t necessarily believe it’s because the police were soft or somehow complicit. There’s plenty of footage of them pepper spraying Trump supporters and otherwise doing their best to hold the line.

No, it is quite simply because there weren’t enough of them:

Look how outnumbered they were. And most of them are running about in bicycle helmets, for Christ sake.

There were certainly some lads with riot gear about in addition to the cycle-cops, but equally clearly there weren’t enough of them to form an effective cordon on their own.

Seriously, we knew there were large pro-Trump protests planned that day. We knew Trump planned to address them directly, and anyone with the slightest bit of common sense or basic EQ can see that’s going to get them riled up. The Capitol, where Congress was sitting to confirm that Biden was in fact President-Elect, was the obvious target for their anger.

It’s absolutely clear that there were not enough resources allocated to protect the Capitol and control the ‘protestors’, and on top of that sending officers into a situation like that wearing cycle helmets rather than proper riot gear is simply negligent.

Whoever was in charge of allocating police resources that day wants firing, at the very least.
