On days like these, how can you not be romantic about Cricket?
It could so easily have been a day of wolves and shattered defences as the batting order came crashing down. That is typically how 5th-day scripts are written.
But it wasn’t. Four Indian batsmen, nay lions, held firm and kept one of the great bowling units in Test Cricket at bay for the entire day. It is a day to savour for Indian cricket.
What a day for Cheteshwar Pujara. Harshly and wrongly criticised for his approach during India’s first innings, he once again demonstrated the merits of his herculean resolve.
Cricket is blessed with artists of all kinds. And while the likes of Kane Williamson and Rohit Sharma are masters of aesthetic artistry, Pujara is an artist in his own right.
An artist of patience, persistence and perseverance. He is the master of his domain.
There is a giant of a man inside that timid and unassuming exterior. And that man stood up for his team yet again today.
What a day for Rishabh Pant. Anyone with even a passing interest in Cricket would readily state that he is a special talent. And his talent was on display today, in the fiercest of crucibles.
Talent has never been enough. And fortunately, Pant possesses something more than his innate talent – the audacity and courage to wield it, even when the chips are down.
He is a cricketer that needs to backed, come hell or high water. Because while he died by the same sword he used to flail Australia, while he was there, he struck fear into their hearts.
What a day for Hanuma Vihari and Ravichandran Ashwin. They are heroes, both of them.
In team India’s hour of need, they battened down the hatches and stared down the mighty Australian attack howling like the wind.
They planted themselves firmly at the crease, and with the strength of a billion souls behind their back, they told the Australian bowlers “No, you move.”
It was heroic. The spirit and character they showed was beyond the realm of numbers or statistics. It was a truly monumental effort.
What a day for the Indian Cricket Team. Although they were battered, bruised and plagued with injuries, these 11 men from India found a way to secure the most unlikely of draws.
And in doing so, they demonstrated the type of team they are – one that will never surrender. One that will fight to their very last breath.
You can’t ask more from your team than what they gave us today. Their effort today is one that will proudly adorn the pages of history.
What a day. What a lovely day.
