My understanding was that the Germans had considered a bomb, but lacked both resources and time to put one together. Their work was supposedly based upon using the atom for energy rather than a bomb. I’ve also read that Heisenberg himself may have intentionally fudged his calculations to prevent the Nazis from undertaking the bomb. Of course, there is debate over whether or not those truly were his intentions. and we’ll never know. One final note on Heisbenberg: Moe Berg, an OSS agent and former baseball player, was sent to Switzerland with orders to kill Heisenberg if it looked like the Germans were capable of building a bomb. Berg decided the Germans weren’t close and Heisenberg’s life was spared. This meeting is dramatized in the movie “The Catcher Was a Spy” if you’re interested. The German scientists would most likely not have been able to have beaten the allies to the atomic bomb. The most able were on the allies side, the most willing to invest the necessary resources were the Americans, the political will power to enable the project the ability to work without undue restraint and interference was with the allies, etc. The Nazis had no real chance. I thought it was the commando raid on St-Nazaire that pissed hitler off royally. They blew the gate on the biggest dry dock on the atlantic coast with a crappy old ship and 9000 lbs of depth charge explosive. It kept the turpitz out of the atlantic for most of the war cos there was nowhere they could ever fix it. That saved millions of tons of allied shipping, and we were starving. Had British trained Norwegian Commandos not destroyed the heavy water plant in Norway and sunk the ferry carrying years worth of heavy water, there is a good chance Hitler would have achieved atomic weapons first’ Possibly but by no means certainly. Allied interviews with captured German scientists post-war revealed that their top nuclear boffin, Heisenberg, was some way off the mark.

Far more than just an annoyance.

Let's be clear, Hitler was so pissed off with British Commandos that he ordered all Allied Commandos be executed on capture.

Commando Order — Any German officer that acted with honour and refused, would be punished under German military law.

Incidentally, this is the signature which would have guaranteed Hitler's death sentence at the Nuremberg trials, had he survived to stand trail.

These elite early special forces, were raiding everywhere; German Radar stations wrecked, vital ports sabotaged, oil refineries destroyed, ships sunk while at dockside, entire air wings blown up on runways, communication lines sabotaged, war plans stolen, and most infuriatingly Hitler's Wunderwaffe projects ruined.
