Oh, absolutely. I've seen this in my cats very often, but one great example I watched some years ago. Right opposite of my house is a field. It’s owned by a neighbor, who had some retired horses. The number and the horses changed of course, as horses don't live forever, sadly. 🐎
He also had more green space for the horses, but now and then, the horses were right opposite of my house. And one of the horses, a stallion, was to be found wandering through the village on occasion.
Of course, I asked the neighbor about this.
His explanation gave me new respect for horses.
The neighbor used an electric horse fence, with a gate like this.
Minus the plastic grip. His line was fixed directly to the metal hook. Which meant that he had to switch off the power to open the gate.
Sometimes he forgot to switch the fence on again. Somehow the stallion had figured this out. So he walked up to that gate and moved his head towards the wire, until his whiskers were near enough (without ever touching the wire) to sense if the wire was switched on. He obviously could sense the juice in the line (the electromagnetic potential, for you science types).
If the power was off, he just gripped the hook with his teeth, lifted it from the fitting, dropped the fence, and went for a walk into town.
Another horse, which was on the green at the same time, wasn’t even able to find the gate once it was open.
