Why was Jason Momoa struggling to find work after his role on Game of Thrones?
Question: Why was Jason Momoa struggling to find work after his role on Game of Thrones?
Multiple reasons, including:
- Conan The Barbarian (2011) was a spectacular failure - It was Momoa’s first big box office leading role and it didn’t even make its budget back. Had that film been the hit that it was proposed to be, he would have been more noticed.
- His limited range - While Momoa is an impressive physical specimen, his acting leaves much to be desired. Although he’s better now than he was decades ago on Baywatch, he’s not going to work in roles that require great amounts of subtlety and character depth.
- His limited track record - Hollywood has been growing “gunshy” for the last two decades about dumping money into unknown performers, especially minority ones. If you don’t have an established track record of financial success, the studios simply are not going to risk tens of millions on you and a project for you.
- Dwayne Johnson - Most of the roles that Jason Momoa might fit were already seeking the much more popular (and proven financial hit) known as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Momoa was likely viewed as being a “backup” for some of those roles; however if Johnson couldn’t get attached, they probably put the project on the shelf, leaving Momoa without work.
- His “exotic look” - While Momoa’s “look” has become appealing, it makes it difficult to cast him in a number of roles. He wouldn’t “work” in a period piece from the early 20th century, he’d have a difficult time in Shakespearean works, and he might even be “out of place” in films which have casts consisting of a single racial grouping. Basically Momoa’s “look” limited (and still limits) his options.
Momoa was/is an odd position. He was primed for bigger things following GoT; however the failure of Conan seems to have impaired that and he seems to have started all over again until Aquaman came along.
