The wife of famous actor Alec Baldwin, Hilaria Thomas, is a relatively successful social media influencer and ‘mommy blogger’ in her own right. Hilaria is very proud of her Spanish roots, speaks Spanish with her kids and has given all five of them Spanish names — Leonardo, Carmen, Rafael, Romeo and Eduardo. In her interviews she usually speaks with a heavy Spanish accent.
Hilaria is proud to be Spanish. It’s part of her identity! She says she moved from Spain, Majorca to be exact, to Boston at the age of 18 to go to school in America. Her parents, she claims, still live in Majorca…
Which is all fine and dandy, if true. Only it isn’t. It’s a fabrication — Hilaria’s real name? Hilary Hayward-Thomas. Born and bred in America. Her family is completely American, as American in fact as they come, with her grandfather who died in 2020 being a Mayflower descendant.
The whole thing began to unravel on December 1, 2020, when Twitter user Leni Briscoe posted a tweet which read "You have to admire Hilaria Baldwin's commitment to her decade long grift where she impersonates a Spanish person"; the Twitter thread included a Today show video in which Baldwin seemingly forgot the English word for "cucumber".
Now she does have a link to Spain, as Hilaria’s parents moved to the island of Majorca in 2011 and have lived there ever since, along with her brother, his wife and their son. However much they love Spain, however, they are not Spanish and English is, and remains, their first language. As it their daughters’.
Hilary Hayward-Thomas has former classmates, and they have come forward. Friends, teachers, people she knew from her childhood in America. None of them recall her ever speaking Spanish, nor English with a Spanish accent. Yet in her interviews, she tends to pronounce words in a Spanish way, making her come across as a non-native. This is not genuine, and is by design. She’s now accused by a lot of people online of ‘cultural appropriation’, a cardinal sin in today’s world.
Now of course, from my understanding, Spanish people are just as ‘white’ as anyone in Europe. Still, being Spanish is more exotic than simply being “American”, something Hilaria may have found boring? Baldwin guys like themselves a bit of an ‘exotic’ woman, Alec’s brother having married a Brazilian wife herself. I’m not even sure if Alec Baldwin is aware of his wife’s lies. Now he’s defending her on social media, rather fiercely. I cannot blame him, it’s his wife and loves her dearly.
Hilaria Baldwin, or should I say Hilary Hayward-Thomas, is trending right now because she lied for over a decade about being Spanish when she was, in fact, an American citizen with zero Spanish roots. She faked being from another country and culture and was caught in her own web of lies.
