She’s a lot of things, Ellen Degeneres. She’s a trailblazer, first of all, being one of the first openly lesbian women making it big in Hollywood. She’s embarked on a reasonably successful comedic career as well, though I never saw her as particularly laugh-out-loud funny. As she grew older she got herself a talkshow and tried to rebrand herself as ‘female Mr. Rogers’. She’d remind viewers after each show to “be kind to each other!”
Which is funny, in retrospect. Because Ellen wasn’t a very nice person at all. She was a meanspirited, horrible boss. She mistreated and mocked young, up and coming stars while sucking up to the established names. Personnel could not look at her, crew members couldn’t address her… she was rude, she was mean. A lot of people in the industry have stories of her being nasty, and it’s been kind of an open secret in Hollywood that the lady has issues and is a far cry from her kindly on-screen persona…
Naturally, when news broke out on Twitter and some stories calling out Ellen for her bad behavior and hypocrisy, it went absolutely viral. She tried to deflect blame, by saying sorry… with a big caveat — she was sorry for the ‘bad, unsafe working environment’ that was caused by… I shit you not… The producers.
Not Ellen, herself, no. The producers. She fired some of them, others quit in protest. She made some half-assed apologies on her show. But she never, once, took personal responsibility for what she did. It was always others being mean, she wasn’t ‘aware’ and didn’t ‘do enough’. Never: “I was a nasty person, I’m sorry.”
So people didn’t buy it. She went from Mr. Rogers to Joffrey from Game of Thrones in public perception. Her show goes on. She does well enough. But the image of kind person urging others to be chill to one another is shattered entirely…
